MOVING ON is something everyone of us have had to do at a point in time in our life, we've moved on, from something tragic, or even something we love so much, but then we realized we needed to let go, if not they would drown us instead of keeping us afloat. It might have been a dream you had or a property of yours with lots of sentimental value. Most times these things we hold onto, no longer benefit us, and holding on to them start to hurt us.
My last post was on PERSEVERANCE, which is the ability to hold on to something you love, even when it looks as if it's not working or even when you feel you should give up on it. But then I'm sure you would agree with me, that not every "dream" deserves ones perseverance. Persevering on some "dreams" are simply just a waste of time.
I asked a mentor of mine a question recently, while chatting with him, I asked him, how do you know when to stop persevering? or how do you know when to stop holding onto something and just MOVE ON? And he replied with a very popular Nigerian song (well not so popular again) by omowunmi which he sang with a melodious voice I must add "if you ask me, na who I go ask" he was clearly just kidding In case you didn't get the joke though. Anyways he went on to ask me some questions I would love to ask you now!
When do you stop eating? Or Why do you stop eating?
Why do you need to reduce your level of sugar. He said, if you are some how able to answer this questions, you would realize that everybody knows when to stop, but the truth is we don't always want to, and we all have our reasons for not wanting to.
I remember one time my mom made my favourite dish "egusi soup and pounded yam" only a few can relate, and it had been a while I had a meal like that, so I sat down, washed my hands and I ate until I literally could no longer put food in my mouth, it was as if I was filled to my throat, even when I was too filled up to continue eating, I still wanted more, because I didn't know when next I would be opportune to eat like that again, trust me it is not as if we were that poor, but mom only made dishes like that only for special occasions.
thinking back now, that was probably not the best of all reasons, but it was good enough for me then. My Story might be unrelated to this, but I hope you get the gist. Like me, everyone has one or two reason they are still holding on to that "dream", and these reasons vary from person to person, and these reasons are what actually stops us from MOVING ON, and these reasons are mostly as a result of our fears.
1. The fear of loosing a something you've given your all to, all your effort, blood and sweat.
2. The Fear of change, now knowing what to expect, cos what if you move to something else and it turns out just as this one did.
And the truth is until you've delt with your fear, and gotten over it, you won't be able to MOVE ON.
HOW DO YOU MOVE ON
MOVING ON, is something we all have to do, and you will agree with me that it is easier said than done, so here are some tips to help you get going.
1. Realize The Need To MOVE ON:
Realizing the need to let go is the most important step of Moving on,
The truth is it takes a lot for you to look at something you love, something you've given your all to, and just decided to let it go. One thing I have come to understand is that in Life change always begins at the point of realization, and only the strong can truly admit to themselves that they need to let go and just move on.
2. Face Your Fears: it very important you deal with your fears cos only then can you move on. and the only way you can overcome your fear Is by facing them.
Yeah! I know it's scary, but it is something you just have to do. because, it is only when you face your fears, you truly see it for what it is. Nothing!
3. Take Chances:
You need to start taking chances, stop overthinking it, I'm not sayings having a plan is bad, what I am saying is, the plan doesn't have to be perfect before you take action, you just do it. Because no matter how much you think about it, you only get results after you've taken action, and those actions will help you make the needed tweaks. But you need to take chances first.
The rest is all up to you now, moving on is never easy, but it has to be done and remember, don't confuse stagnation with progress, don't do it.
