THE WAIT: 3 Tips To Help You Hold On To Your Dreams

The Wait

After thousands of efforts to make the electric light bulb, Thomas Edison said, “I haven’t failed, I have only identified 10,000 ways that it doesn’t work.”

That is the statement of a man with great ability to persevere, a man who was able to pass through his trials and triumph over them, a man with great waiting capacity.

Have you ever wanted to give up on an interesting paper you were writing in school, or maybe quit the new business you started with the hope of making it big and now it's looking as if it's going no where?  we've all been there, that moment your dream seems too far fetched, and you just want to throw in the towel. I remember when I was a kid my dream was to design cars, not just design but also make them, why? Well because they fascinated me, plus I wanted to own a lot of cool cars, you know, just like the toy cars I had back then, but then life happened, and my dreams have changed a couple of times since then, and trust me when I say I never dreamt of doing this, but I'm glad I'm here though, but imagine if I was able to wait, through all of life's challenges and navigate every curve life threw at me without dropping my dream, imagine if I had not giving up on it and still held onto it just like Thomas did his, I might have been the one to cause revolution in the automobile industry... I'm just saying.

Patience takes practice. You'll need to work on it daily --Jennifer Nelson

Perseverance is a SKILL a lot of us fail to develop, the ability to wait, and persevere is one ability that a lot of us take for granted, everyone wants it now! when we plant, we want to harvest it, If possible immediately... We tend to forget that anything worthwhile takes time... Check out every revolutionary inventions, like the inventions of airplanes, inventions of ships, even the invention of the automobiles, and yeah if you haven't realized it yet, I was a tech geek. Anyways, my point is all these inventions all seems crazy at the beginning, un-achievable and even when the inventors were courageous enough to start, they met with a lot of hiccups, challenges, but they never gave up, they persevered and they were able to beat THE WAIT... and I tell you, this is not an easy thing to beat, it is one if the many challenges everyone must overcome if they are ever to make a mark in life.

A young boy asked a question in one of our Bible study session, he asked, (I'm paraphrasing now!) "Is it a must we face challenges before we are able to achieve anything, is it not possible to make it to the top without struggling" I guess he was still naive cause the truth is have you ever climbed anything? especially a long climb, do you know how difficult it can be. The truth is everyone wants to get to the top, but not everyone wants to go through the stress, and like the young boy, most of us are trying to see if we can avoid the stress of climbing, hoping we can get to the very top with ease.

How Do You Persevere

Like I said earlier on Perseverance is a Skill, and like every other skills, it needs to be honed. So, how then do you hone your skill. Here are 3 tips to help you learn the art of perseverance.

1. Don't Be afraid to fail - failure is a phenomenon a lot of us misunderstand, and as such we tend to fear it, but the truth is failure is a teacher, instead of fearing it, you should all learn to see the lessons it teaches us, the truth is without failure, you cannot become resilient. So change your relationship with failure, see the lessons and not the stagnation.

2. Remember the reason pushing you: when you are frustrated, tired and overwhelmed by the challenges you face, ask your self this question, "why did I set out on this path, what is my reason?" sometimes all we need to keep pushing for is remembering that thing that drives us.

3. Make your goal plain and visible: setting your goal gives you clarity, it gives you a sense of direction, it helps you know the next step to take, cos it gives you clarity. This helps avoid confusion and confusion is a dream killer, when you are not sure.
